ABOUT YOUR TEACHER

IONA MCAULEY | ARTIST, EXPERIENCED ART EDUCATOR

Iona is a contemporary painter and experienced arts educator. Born and educated in Scotland, Iona completed a Bachelor of Design (Illustration) before moving to Perth, where she further studied Design for Live Performance Theatre and Events at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA).

Iona began her career in theatre design, creating sets, costumes, and puppets for live performance, but soon found her true calling in community arts. Working closely with regional and remote communities in Western Australia, she developed a deep appreciation for the West Australian landscape—an influence that continues to shape her work today.

Best known for her vivid depictions of the Pilbara, birds and Native Australian flowers, Iona works primarily with acrylics, inks, and watercolours, using light and colour to capture atmosphere and movement. In her classes, she shares these techniques, guiding students in composition, layering, and colour mixing, while encouraging experimentation and personal expression.
Please join us in welcoming Iona to Studio Subi!
