In this special cultural session, you will experience two popular Japanese crafts - Origami and Sumi-e Japanese ink painting.
Origami will be suited to beginners level. We will teach you the basic origami folds then put those skills into folding your very own paper crane.
An introductory class to Sumi-e, Japanese carbon-ink brush painting.
After some foundation history and background on this Japanese art, we begin the practical section of the workshop by learning techniques to holding the brush, Yumi will guide you through techniques to getting the right pigment of ink to paint a traditional sumi-e art on rice paper.
Choose to practice the Bamboo or Asian Wild Orchid (recommended for beginners), or learn to write a Japanese word in brush stroke. "Love" is popular to celebrate a wedding anniversary. We will customise a special class to suit your preferences.
You will experience far-eastern philosophical art and techniques that are different from western painting.
All materials will be supplied, plus you'll enjoy Japanese tea and small treats.
As a bonus, you will have your name translated into Japanese characters.
This form of art is relaxing to learn, you'll be surprised at how much better you can concentrate and be tranquil at the same time, as is the calming nature of the Japanese culture. The combination of origami and sumi-e makes for a soothing mindfulness activity.
If you would like further lessons, repeat students can progress onto the Cherry Blossom, Chrysanthemum, and other designs in our regular Sumi-e classes.
